Welcome to the Food SecurityToolkit. Peace Corps agriculture and health specialists are pleased to present this toolkit.
Food security has been identified as a complex, sustainable development issue, linking health, agricultural production, the environment and economic development. The three pillars of food security are food access, food availability and food use. The World Food Summit of 1996 defined food security as existing when "all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life."
As with any other type of successful community activity Volunteers should involve communities in their efforts, including a range of stakeholders throughout project planning and implementation. If Volunteers expect that this activity may include facilitation of technology or infrastructure, or may occupy a significant portion of their time, they should be sure to be well informed and to identify at least one technical expert who they and their community can consult along the way.

This section contains general/background information on food security themes, goals and initiatives. Its purpose is to serve as a source of basic information for Peace Corps Volunteers so that they may have a better understanding of the modern food security movement and how their projects fit into larger scale food security initiatives.

The technical resource/how-to guides section is designed to be a clearinghouse of proven field techniques. Here you can find project plans and technical documents that can teach you how to implement food security projects.

In this section you will find food security information that is particular to certain Peace Corp Countries. This includes technical resources, presentations and Post food security plans. Even if your country is not listed here, these resources may prove valuable to Volunteers and Post Staff as a way to see what other Peace Corps Posts are doing to address food security problems.
